Losing Jane
< >Ring… Ring… The school dismissal bell rang, echoing around the school. Within minutes, the staircase was flooded with students. It was just like a sea of black heads bobbing up and down. “Hey Alice, I have to meet Miss Lim. You can go home first.” I shouted over the din, waving to my best friend.

< >Walking down the corridor towards the staffroom, I started singing my favourite song. The path was very quiet except for the noise came from the canteen. Sob, sob. A soft sob entered my ears. It sounds it came from an empty classroom. Out of curiosity, I tiptoed into the classroom, not wanting to disturb the person inside.

< >Sitting behind the classroom was a girl. I asked her what was wrong. “Nothing went wrong. Can you please leave me alone,” she sobbed, waving me away with her hand. That voice sounds familiar. It was Jane! Jane was my classmate and I had known her since primary 2.i consoled her and asked her what was wrong again. She looked up. Eyes puffy and red, desperation and sadness was shown on her face.

< >Jane told me that she had failed her examinations and she was afraid that her mother would scold her. Her mother was a famous doctor and she also wanted Jane to be a doctor. Her mother was a short –tempered person. I was trying to think of an idea to help Jane. Then, an idea struck into my mind. I had decided to go home with Jane and helped her to explain to her mother. Then, I told my plan to Jane. Immediately, her face turned as white as a sheet of paper. “No! She would get angry! No!” Jane shouted and dashed off before I could stop her. I started chasing after her but her speed was too fast.

< >I ran to the staffroom and related the whole incident to Miss Lim. After hearing what I said, Miss Lim called the office to page for Jane. “Jane from 6 Joy. Jane from 6 Joy please proceed to the staffroom, thank you.” We waited there for a few minutes, but no one came. Miss Lim and I decided to look for Jane together. Then, we heard an announcement asking Miss Lim to go to the fourth floor toilet. We ran as fast as we could to the fourth floor toilet. Tears rolled down from my cheeks when I saw Jane hanging from the ceiling of the toilet. She was dead. The police and paramedics came and Jane was whisked away.

< >If I did not suggest going home with her she would still be alive. I could not stop blaming myself for causing Jane’s death.
